A leap into the unknown
Our business is based on a strong tradition of family entrepreneurship. But when we started Herta, we took a leap into the unknown: we had no experience in the catering sector, but we had enthusiasm and ideas.
It was 2017 when our bid for the land and buildings in Kemi station yard went through as if by chance, and suddenly we were the owners of empty properties in the station area. The former station restaurant, which had been sleeping like a bed of roses, and the employees' apartments upstairs got the new life they deserved when we revived the main building, which was built in 1932 and had been empty for 30 years, with a major renovation.
The logs found under the pink veneers are a reminder of the past and are still the heart of Herta's rustic atmosphere today. During the same renovation, we also spruced up the former VR clubhouse, built in 1904, now known as the Railway Yard.
Good things come slowly, and work doesn't stop when you do it - and that's good. Alongside the day-to-day running of the café, it's inspiring to brainstorm ideas for developing the station area and sometimes to dip our hands into something other than dough. So, please, send us your own wishes and ideas, we'd love to hear them!
